1/20, El Corazon, a Tribute to Death, lots of bands
So, sorry if the was posted somewhere before, and I took it from a bulletin I posted, but I just want to make sure people come out.
My band Dybbuk has our first show set. We are playing the Death benefit show at El Corazon on January 20th. Doors at 5:30pm, show starts at 6pm. $7 to get in. ALL proceeds go to help pay for the medical bills left behind by Chuck Schuldiner, former singer/guitarist of Death, from his untimely passing.
If you are a friend of mine, if I have ever made sure I came out to see your band play, if you give a shit about metal, or if you just have nothing to do on a Sunday night, be at this show. Show support for a scene that gets no recognition except for the people that care about it. We go on at 6pm, we are the first band, if you show up late, I'm cool with that, just show up and help prove that metal heads are not just a bunch of jackoffs that care about only themselves.
Click on the flyer to go to the Myspace page for the show. I'll see you there.

while I agree with you whole heartedly on that, how many people would attempt to fake their deaths to not have to pay medical bills then? I think if you're in a metal band and you die however it should totally be wiped away because we all know that there's hardly any money being made playing metal.Jonathan wrote:two blocks from my place, so yeah, I'll be there.
And the whole concept of paying for bills years after his death, is sickening. Bills and debt should pass away with the person.

I'm the bassist, and I've made it absolutely clear to everyone else in the band that isn't Latin for "roadie while you get to drink and hit on chicks."

Good news for me, I finally got my car back today. Bad news, it wasn't till 10 PM and I've rented out my soul to work till the end of the month. haha
Hope you guys have fun!
The only person there besides me, was Adam from SomnomBallistic and Freak the bassman at least that I knew because the rest were kids and their parents.
Is was really sad to see such a poor turn out. It is easy to understand why the music scene here went/is going under. What happened to the days when people went out to support there friends regardless of the genre of music. Back in the ealry 90's no matter what day of the week, the bars were full.
I felt really bad for my friends who played last night. Mostly, because they were told by their friends they would be their to support them and no one was there. It's a shame cuz the music was fuckin awsome.
It was nice to see the younger generation taking an active role to keep Death Metal alive. Lucky for us older folk that they come out to support their friends or this genre would fall to the wayside here in Seattle.
You guys missed a great show!

The show, sorry Freakmaster, I was not able to go to the show, or go anywhere, yesterday/lastnight because of personal reasons. Bummed I missed it because of (a) I wanted to see all the bands, your's, Slutvomit, and the other new guys. (b) I liked the fact that it wasn't a scenesters show where all the usual people were going to and (c) to "support" chuck's causes.
I first met Chuck Schuldiner when I was 17 years old. I told him I was in a death metal band because of him and to give me some advice. He said "get a lawyer, then just have fun and don't listen to anyone". Good advice. The latter is something many here should pay attention to... That was almost 17 years ago.
As for the scene. I've been in this one for a while and I've been in the California death metal scene before that, when it was just starting (90-96). This current scene is better than it EVER was since I've lived here. That's if we're talking extreme metal. There are tons of bands, and for the most part are all friendly and supportive of each other.
The most important problem of having such a vibrant scene is that people get lazy (I'm guilty of this) and don't promote shows like they used to. Not saying Freak did that, he was promoting. But outside of this forum and the truemetalseattle forum... there was nothing that I saw, no fliers no real ads etc. That is the usual for many shows because it's hit and miss. You can do no work for 4 shows in two months, 2 of them will be packed with people, the other 2 will have four people.
The issue of "supporting the scene" is a complex one. This show I wanted to see, not because I want to support a scene, but I was interested in going to it. When I go to a show, it's because I'm interested in going to it. I will not go to a show to see bands I don't like, in the name of "supporting the scene". That's ridiculous and a waste of my time, money. And in reality that HURTS the scene. It doesn't become a "MUSIC" scene, it becomes a socializing scene that really has nothing to do with music. Just a bunch of partiers needing a place to party.
The goal of a band should NOT be to be in a scene. It should be to create great music and/or be successful (get out of town, tour, make albums). If you strive to be in the scene, maybe joining a gang would be better suited to you.
I learned this a long time ago, that to blame people who don't show up to your show or your friends show, and then talk shit about them, is really absurd. Because of my reason, there was no way I was going anywhere lastnight to do anything. Chris has a family (that's always #1 priority). If people can't grasp real-life responsibilities taking #1 priority, then well, one day they will.
As for Freak, you guys will set up another show. And I'm sure you'll work your ass off to promote and flier it. And there will be mucho people there. Barring my commitments, I'll be there along with many others.
But silly comments to people like "you don't support the scene" is, well, silly. It's definitely one of my pet peeves. I know dozens of fans of local metal bands who "supported the scene" but have stopped going to all shows because of the people claiming to actually BE the scene. Those people, along with me, have invested a large amount of money (thousands) over the years ACTUALLY PAYING THE DOOR COVER, BUYING bands' shirts and cds. You see, just being at the show doesn't help a band if no money was paid at the door and shirts/cds are free.
The last few years I've stopped getting fired up on threads for the most part. But this fairytale "scene" issue has always did it for me. And I think I have some good points that would benefit other bands to know:
#1 Have fun
#2 Be successful (that could be just to have fun, or it could be to tour and "make it")
#3 Don't listen to ANYONE (I still haven't learned this, but I'm trying haha)
Fans of local metal:
#1 Have fun
#2 Support the bands you love (MONEY)
#3 Don't listen to ANYONE (including me)
With that formula, there will either be a thriving scene or not. And, one day we will all die, so what does it matter anyway?

well, aside from what was all previously mentioned, I had a great time. We had some technical difficulties near the end of the show, and our singer quit the day before the show so our old singer stepped up and got on stage with us, but all in all for a first show I think we did alright.
Part of me is glad that more people did show up right at the beginning because honestly I was fucking nervous. I'm bummed that there wasn't a much better turnout, but like Jon said there really wasn't a whole lot of promoting going on. I can see why people are frustrated with the scene, hell in my drunken stupor last night I said a few off color comments about the scene, but thinking about it now with a clearer mind set and a slight headache things happen, people have lives. I'm just as guilty about not going to shows unless there is a really awesome lineup I'm just dying to see or it's something I want to cover for my website, so I shouldn't really be that upset because last thing I want to do is call the kettle black. One of my biggest concerns is that last I heard there wasn't even enough of a draw to get the venue paid for, so any money that was collected didn't do shit for the cause we set the show up for.
Oh well, live and learn. Thanks to everyone that did come out (even the guy that talked shit about me while I was on stage trying to fill dead air) and to everyone that wasn't there, you were missed but we'll see ya next show.
