Change @ The Central -What to do? Please Read!!

Post by Scott (S2C) »

As some of you may have heard or experienced first hand, Daniel, the sound man at the Central, was let go. While I cannot say that I am privy to all of the facts behind the situation, but it seems to be directly related to the new booking company that is now working with the central.

S2C, has had the pleasure of working with Daniel at the Central on countless occassions over the past 7 years, and as we can honestly say that this decision was poorly made and we do not support it. Fans and musicians alike all know the importance of having someone who knows the ins and outs of a club's sound and how integral they are at providing both the fans and the musicians with an environment where all parties are able to fully enjoy the experience. There are very few clubs in this town where I personally feel the person running sound for us really "Knows" there room as well as Daniel knows the Central (I am using current tense because I refuse to believe that this choice should stand). He also works very hard to accomodate the bands and get them the best sound both on stage and off, no matter what style.

With this in mind, I urge everyone and anyone to please send an email to the Central's Owner (Guy@centralsaloon.com), and voice the need to have Daniel reinstated as the sound engineer for the Central Saloon.

I know what that room can sound like when he is behind the board, and I know what it sounds like when he isn't. It's simple, Daniel is the best sound engineer for the Central, and we need to remind them of that.

Please feel free to use any of the above as a template when mailing Guy, but I urge you to email him regardless. He needs to hear from his patrons and musicians that this is unacceptable and we completely disagree with the decision.

That is fucked beyond words! What the hell, Daniel was a hell of a good engineer for the room, and a hell of a guy to boot! Fuck it all, the last metal friendly room in the square and they take the only guy who can make the room sound good away??!!

Who is booking there these days Scotty?

That's why we need to send mail to Guy (guy@centralsaloon.com) letting him know it was a mistake and should be fixed ASAP.

I think the new booker's name is Dickie, or something.

Josh knows for certain.

Booking has been taken over by 'Monster Productions'. Now instead of live music 365 days a year, we get at least 2 nights of DJ bullshit a week. Buuuuuulllllshit.

Honestly, who didn't see this coming? This no doubt sucks for Daniel & I feel for him. However, seeing as how pioneer square has steered away from live music & people not going out as much (thank you crappy ecomony), it was only a matter of time. Unfortunately, DJs will always be a cheaper alternative to live music. You can email all you want, but it all comes down to $$$. It's nothing personal. It really is just business. Several of my friends who work in clubs & venues are feeling the pinch. Spending on entertainment costs is way low on a clubs priority list overall.

I'm sure we'll see Daniel doing a fine job elsewhere in no time.

well said, don't hate the player hate the game..........I go to the central most everyday for lunch hence i work 1 block from the joint and there is good people there, its almost family too me. I'm never in favor of taking music away but honestly i've been seeing the place fail to deliver top notch shows aside from all our friends bands that play there, we all know you cannot run a business relying on just friends to come out........ blessed be!

The only reason he was let go was due to him not getting along with the new management.

If the club is going to multiple nights of DJ'd music, so be it. I think it sucks, but I understand the logistics and financial side of it. My main contention is on nights that they DO have live music, they need to have someone running the sound who knows the room and can make it sound like it should. Good turnout or not, people will stop showing up if they know the sound at a certain club isn't up to par.

why don't all you bands who want him so, hire him to do your shows at the Central?

That way you can have your rat and eat it too, I meant cake... rat cake.

Sorry, I just can't get over how large and happy that rat looked when I saw him scurrying over to the bar one night.

Rats off to ya!

We tried that. It was shot down, quickly.....

To me its more an issue of making the room sound good than what goes on at The Central on _______day each week. It sucks that 2 nights a week are dedicated to DJ's, but if that helps bring traffic in (and the $$$ associated with it) then thats what they gotta do. Daniel knows the room, makes bands sound good, and was the appropriate person for the job. I'd be saying the same thing if (god forbid) John was let go from Studio 7, he knows the room, and has a kick ass system there to make shows sound great... To give credit where its due, the guy running sound at the Central last Wed was very nice... just had no clue how to even mic my kit without my suggestions and IMO didn't sonically know his ass from a hole in the ground...

Yeah, I was told I could not use Daniel as our soundguy either. Instead we had to try to make the most of a soundguy that had no idea what the hell he was doing. I put on my birthday show at the Central because with all the changes that happen throughout the Who's Buying? set, I know Daniel can keep up. I guess it'll just be chalked up to one more mistake in a long line of mistakes the bar's been making.

Personally, I don't see how DJs are going to help that club. I am completely aware of the costs involved in live bands playing the Central and any good DJs are going to want a guarantee of at least what the bands would make if not more. I can't see people going to the Central because there's a DJ spinning, and depending on what kind of music they spin, the Central could even end up sharing Larry's fate. Or at least end up spending more money on extra security.

For anyone that wants to know, Dickie is the name of the new booker. He runs Monster Productions. Charlie D. (the old booker who got fired) was running sound Wednesday. Dickie can be reached at the bar every day from 1 to 4 or the Central's myspace page for booking or whatever.

Daniel's my friend, too, so I'm obviously biased. God I miss the Chad-era Central Saloon.

Isn't Daniel the guy who has the big "tumory-looking thing" on his forehead? Sorry, it's been such a long time since I've been in that place, I have a terrible time associating names with faces. If that IS the guy I'm thing of, it is definitely a terrible loss to the club. He always did a great job running sound when I was on stage, and was a great dude to chat with, also.

You mean you can't hire your own sound guy at The Central??? Or is it just this particular guy they've banned (sorry, I'm the outta towner and don't really know the cat)? That's one of the weirdest things I've ever heard.

I just hope they don't run the place into the ground before I move back. The Central always reminded me of my favorite club here in Milwaukee, The Globe (RIP). Sure the stage wasn't huge or anything but it had a cool atmosphere with a good staff and it felt like home (shit, the Summer of 96 it practically was home). As far as bringing in a DJ on select nights, that's nothing new to me. Out here there is no way you could book bands all week long. Hardly anyone wants to show up for the weekend shows. Much less a show on a Wednesday night. There's a club/bar down in Chicago called The Exit and they do the DJ thing all the time but the place definitely caters to your metal/punk/industrial type crowds (I don't even know if they book bands at all). I suppose I could deal with a DJ every now and then if it had that sort of flavor to it. Just don't give me no dance shite!:chainsaw:

Hope everything works out for the best.

There are plenty of places around town and some near The Central that are DJ centered already. If it is just a business decision then it is a poor one to jump into a saturated market. People know The Central as a place for live music and know that it is the location to go to in Pioneer Square. Now they are going to show up and be all like WTF and shit.

In my opinion the DJ thing is a stupid move but not just for the reasons you might think. Here they are centered between clubs the do exclusively DJ oriented stuff, (J&M and Scarlett is it? What used to be Larry's) Those places have strong clientele and are known for it. It looks desperate and people can tell. Do what you're known for but do it well and not half assed. My .02 BTW Nils is GONE. The first of many I am told. (Achimba we were writing those responses at the same time! lol)

Oh damn... did I say that out loud? Umm... nothing.. :llama:

Yes, we are seriously exploring the idea of moving back. Everything we hate about the Midwest is really grating on us and shows no signs of getting better. When we look back to when we lived out there, other than the job situation at the time, we really loved the Seattle area. It all hinges on whether I can get my apprenticeship transferred without sacrificing any of my accrued time and pay rate. If so, we're looking at next Spring. If not we'll have to wait until I can complete it here. Regardless, it's only a matter of time and I've kind of known that all along.

However, we will definitely be out to visit the week of Thanksgiving again. :dsmoke:
