We're down to four days a week and the boss is talking about going to three.

That means there are bills that arent getting paid.

The Boeing strike, the general level of small manufacturing, everything is fucked. It'll be at least a couple months before that small overload parts market gets off the ground and we wont see anyting but the nickle and dime crap for at least that long. Can't pay my rent being $600 short every month.

Fuck you very much George.

As I've said many times before, being self-employed is a LOT more work than a 9-to-5, but at least I'll never be fired. Thankfully, the porn business is pretty much recession-proof so my client base is actually increasing steadily.

Yeah well, you should give me some pointers on being self-employed then. My aggravation threshhold with the construction business is about reached....

1) - find something you can stomach doing all day every day

2) - make sure you can do it better than about 70-80% of all the other people doing it

3) - make sure there aren't a whole lot of people already doing it in the market or physical location you are interested in

4) - make sure it's something that people must have (or think they must have) regardless of the economy

5) - never compete on price

6) - never fuck people over

7) - take every opportunity to make yourself indispensable to your clients/customers

8) - never take any shit from anyone

Now is this digital storage?
I can tell you that the backup and archive market is shifting to disk and less tape. Which is one reason I'm loosing my job. R&D for tape got an ass pounding and I'm contract. Hence first to be cut.
Joe,
Back me up on this but any IT person who only has disk and no tape for archive is fuckin stoooooopid!

Yeah. What the fuck is up with the economy? I took the advice of an earlier post and still have my $400 worth of soup, along with bottles of wine and vodka, though. :skull:

As an old schooler, I trust a tape archive MUCH more than I trust ANY hard disk. So I personally agree with you

BUT - Disk archival is becoming more and more cost effective vs tape these days, and it's a lot easier to use. It's where archival is heading.

iron mountain stores everything you can possibly think of. legal docs, tape and disk, gettty images, smithsonian stuffs, medical samples, xrays, anything that needs to be stored. they are the biggest in the world, hell they even store the governments documents and nirvana's original recordings.

Amen.

I have to agree with Pat that self-employment is the way to go...but only if you have a great idea or service, a niche that wants what you offer and the motivation and self-discipline that is required to run a business.

It's not very easy and not always fun. I'm literally exhausted most of the time - I've been at this since mostly non-stop for the past 2 years. I don't get out much or see my friends much, which sucks. But the benefit is that I'm in no way hurting financially...and I've tried to be smart about where I put my money.

I am going to start bringing on contractors next year. My business does graphic and web design along with virtual assistance. So if any of you have a graphic or web design background and you freelance, pm me. I'm especially interested in speaking with you if you are a programmer with skilled PHP/MySQL experience.

self employment enjoyment for sure

Post by YTSEJAM »

I'm also self employed( sub contract and my own biz) in the fire and flood restoration biz and never out of or short of work. Even with the economy the way it is, people are still calling me constantly to get their houses painted. I have so much work I can work 16hrs a day, 6 days a week for a year solid. That's the beauty about working with insurance companies, everyone must have house or some type of insurance when owning a house or condo... never stops,
I love lamp.

Self employment was good for me while the dot-com bubble ran its course, but I HATED having to promote and sell my services once the bubble popped.

Today, I don't make as much money, but do work for a very good company which has never once laid off an employee in its several decades of existence. They do pay me well, plus pay 100% of my medical, I get a 20% bonus every quarter, and they put 11% into my 401k (I don't have to invest a penny). My point: Self employment is great for many reasons, but working for a company has its perks too.
