What's really driving me nuts are the folks who can't fucking drive in the snow. Worse yet, the folks that think that 4 wheel drive means they can go fast on ice.

Attention 4WD drivers: 4 WHEELS SLIP JUST AS MUCH ON ICE AS ANYBODY ELSE'S CAR! SLOW THE FUCK DOWN!

Get the fuck out of my WAY! I was born driving on snowy and icy roads, and it's more about maintaining your momentum than it is GOING SLOW. You're MUCH more likely to slip and slide all over hell when your wheels stop rolling than if you keep constant power to the wheels.

There was some guy at work laughing about how he was doing 65 mph thru a 25 on the ice and getting flipped off. LAUGHING about it. I looked straight at him and said, "that's just retarded." The surprised look on his face was funny; I was just thinking "what, just 'cause I'm wearing a metal shirt and Jagermeister beanie I'm supposed to be a douchebag like you?" Pffft.

For the record, when it was icy down here I kept my speed slow and reasonable. It wasn't just about me slipping, it was also being able to have more space to react when someone else who DIDN'T know how to drive on ice decided to slip into my lane.

We're heading to my work's Christmas party at the Skagit Hotel and with tonight's new storm coming in, I figured I'd pack an axe with me.

Attention competent, experienced snow drivers:

When native Seattlites bitch about people going too fast in a 4WD/AWD drive vehicle, we usually mean other native Seattlites. If you are a competent snow driver, you're not likely driving so fast that you can't stop should the need arise, and you're probably also not driving so fast that you couldn't turn or change lanes should the need arise. Additionally, it is unlikely that you will experience the back end of your car suddenly getting a wild hair and trying to outrun the front end of your car for no discernable reason.

In truth, a vast majority of the cars that get stuck in the snow in this area are driven by locals who mistakenly think AWD/4WD means business as usual. They go too fast down hill, too slow up hill, and do everything far too suddenly and without sufficient forethought for the weather conditions.

All of which raises another question: It snows this bad in this area, on average, less than once every year. WTF is everyone doing out there driving in it? Even if you do know what you're doing, nobody else around you does. It's like trying to hold Driver's Ed at a demolition derby. What in the hell could possibly be so all-fired important that you can't put your life on hold for a day or two, stay home, toast marshmallows and make yourself sick eating smores (hint - microwave a marshmallow santa a few seconds and smoosh it between graham crackers!) and reading a good book? I know some people's jobs don't cut them much slack, but truly, this is just nuts!

MMMM. Thanks for the tip on Marshmallow Santa!!!!

Oh. my. Lemme tell you a lil' holiday story,"The Nightmare on 87th Street & Greenwood".
I am a certified Adrenaline FREAK. Yep. I am one of the people that you see re-testing the older folks, testing the wee teens that are ready to drive with the big kids.....the one whom tests those that have lost their license for whatever reason, and finally the ones whom barely speak this Nations official language and never, NEVER, learned how to drive appropriately. (In some countries they run over chickens, property, people, and just keep going. If they stop, more than likely they'll be murdered.)

So with all that said, all I know is what the crazy things drivers do when its IDEAL driving conditions...so I generally stay home, and get chauffeured when I want to go out.:D

And oh mg, we don't conduct drive tests in this weather.

I just got home from work (I work in Lakewood and live in Renton). I drive an AWD van and lived in Green Bay, WI for a few years. I drove a taxi, in Green Bay, for 3 years, so I know how to drive in REAL snowstorms. What I don't understand is the fucking idiots here that are driving on I-5 in a little 2WD honda and going 60 MPH when you can't even see what lane you're in. I saw 5 cars in the ditch, 2 accidents and one asshole in a Chevy Lumina who kept changing lanes and cutting people off. I kept hoping he would end up in a ditch. I am very glad to be home, safe and sound.

well...I need my job and am responsible for making people's xmas presents. you know, the kind that will be passed down through the generations or will make the loved one cry. that's some massive guilt on my shoulders. some people get really mad when they don't get their way (why don't the happy one's ever write emails or make phone calls?) and upper management gets mad if they aren't making money. tomorrow, I walk the 2.something miles up and down the hills buses refuse to go down because they're so bad. no more driving in the snow for a couple of days for me. saw my life flash before my eyes today. hot chocolate will make it better. :)

I'd much rather stay at home.

Looks like a foot of snow is on the way in the next 24 hours, with a brief interlude of ice chunks falling from the sky around noon Sunday, (a.k.a. sleet) followed with another lovely blanket of snow to hide the thick layer of ice on everything. Be prepared for your power to go out and your roof to be crushed. Freezing rain always takes down a few power lines and heavy tree branches.

Welcome to Wisconsin.

Except you guys don't have to put up with this shit 5 to 6 months out of the year like I do. Your fortune lies in that this harsh winter streak you're currently experiencing will end before too long and it will go back to rain. At the same time, I have yet to see any reports of you guys hitting single digit temps yet. The high for us tomorrow is 9 and Monday's high is 6 here in Milwaukee.

I can't wait to get the fuck out of this state.

I'm still amazed that at one point we hit 12 degrees... We're back up to normal now (currently 45 - heat wave!), so I hope it starts normalizing up there for y'all.

Maybe you guys will get the elusive White Christmas that I've never had... (cue sad violins)

Dumping hard in Silver Lake. We got about 8 inches last night, who knows what we will get today. We stocked up well on food and drink and have a ton of firewood. We're going up to Spencer Island for a bit, it should be beautiful.

Weather Channel keeps saying that our low for tonight is 4 yet I have yet to see the thermometer on my computer go above -1 all day long. Plus it's windy as hell so the wind chill is -21. Tomorrow isn't looking any better and I generally work outside. Hopefully my foreman will take pitty on us and find some indoor work for us exterior guys to do.

I think this is the first time in a long time that I actually want it to be Christmas already. Not on any sort of religious level. I just don't want to work in this shit.
