If it hasn't been in a pawn shop...
... it can't play the blues.
BB King said it, so it must be true.
I'm in the market for a tube combo amp. Something loud enough for practicing with a band, and stage (although it'd be mic'd). Something with a nice biting clean channel as well as a dirty distortion channel, with a foot switch to boot.
Guitar Center is for posers (and rich people).
So I'm wondering if anyone knows of some of pawn shops around the puget sound that are known to have a good musical equipment stock.
Or, better yet, someone here wanting to get rid of the above at a decent price.
Thanks!

Take a picture, trick. I'm on a boat, bitch.
Peavey Classic, Fender Twin... If you want small I've played some awesome sounding Super Champs. Pawnshops are a burn any more though, they all know what shit is worth and don't deal like they used to. Of course these days there might be enough volume of shit that they are unloading it cheaper. I'd look for mr. desperate on craigslist.
The Classic is a pretty damn cool amp for the money and there are a million mods out there for it. One of the few pieces of gear that Peavey didn't fuck up. They did make a 5150 combo too although they are kinda hard to find.

heh, good for him. And really, when I say that about GC, I'm mainly talking about the guitar center in Lynnwood, only one cool person works there, the rest=shit.Blake NWR wrote:Don't let the guitarist from Origin hear you say that... that's his day job.
Mars Music was way better.

If you're lookin cheep Jonny boy, check out some off brandish stuff, Acoustic Control Corp, Traynor, Silvertone etc... It'll be old, and probably ugly, BUT it'll sound good.Jonathan wrote:Nothing wrong with posers. Posers are awesome. So are rich people.
But Guitar Center is no place for this poor old elitist j.ew from the dirty streets of east LA, knowin' nothin' of the world of tube amps.
The only "investment" with a guaranteed high rate of return is EDUCATION. Go rent a cheap shack and get your asses back to college or trade school. Don't come out until you're not stupid anymore~ Pat the Wise!
Pricey, but I bet this thing is a great sounding box...

Looks like Fender has a new version of the Super Champ that isn't too bad... Not real powerful but they always had great versatile tone... Used on Ebay for $250 or new for $300... Reviews at:

If you can't afford a hand-made boutique amp, look around for an old (like 30 years +) and possibly broken but reasonably-high-end amp that you can have rebuilt and hot-rodded by a local tube guy. Big fenders (twin, super, etc), Ampeg, Marshall, Vox. Most of the time, it's the output transformer that gets fried. They can be replaced for $50-$100 or you can buy a spool of wire and rewind the original yourself. THAT ALONE will give you the right to play the blues
Unless you're trying for a "different" sound, stay away from the low-end crap that is now "hip" just because it's old. I have a Silvertone head among other things. (cost me $50 on eBay) It's such an offensive piece of shit, I will only put Chinese tubes in it because it doesn't deserve anything better. I run it thru my Marshall 4x12 to chase racoons away from my garbage cans.
