Techie Help Needed
I'm trying to set up my D-Link DI-524 wireless router with encryption. I'm in the middle of the setup wizard and the damn thing wants me to input 26 HEX characters! Where the hell do I find that? Do I make it up?
I just enabled WEP encryption. It was supposed to give me a choice between HEX and ANSII, but I only got HEX.
Help!

Looks like a key that you make up.
Step 3 Select Enable next to the WEP radio buttons. For WEP encryption select 64, 128, or 256-bit encryption. For the Key type select HEX. If you have an option for Authentication type, select Shared Key.
Step 4 Select Key 1. Enter a Hex encryption key that you make up. The length of the encryption key will depend on what you selected under WEP Encryption.

Thanks, Skippy & Pndscm.PnDsCm wrote:Don't use WEP... Use WPA... If your AP doesn't support it go buy one that does. WEP is relatively insecure and a pain in the ass when you have to enter 13 or 26 digits of hex into every device you want to connect.
What is the difference between the WEP & WPA?
I inherited the router and was trying it out. I am new to this wireless stuff. I've been too worried about the security of a wireless connection, so I have 25 and 50 foot LAN cords all over my house. Security is a major concern for me, so if the WPA has better security, I will buy one of those.
Tipton says the wires make for a faster connection for XBox 360, so we want to keep that and the main computer attached with cords.
We now have a DSI2, a PSP and my iTouch iPod that all need wireless to access wifi. So I would have to enter that code in all three devices? Plus my laptop in my room (I currently have a 25 ft cord going from the office to the bedroom). Nice decor, I know.
Another question, since I have such great techie help here and I'm fairly ignorant on the subject. When I was at the airport, I tried to access a wifi on my iTouch Ipod (NOT a phone). Do I have to sign up and pay for a wifi service to get access? I have Comcast at home.
Thanks so much! I'll buy you a beer next time I see ya!

WEP and WPA are just two different wireless encryption algorithms. Chris is right about WEP. Can be cracked without too much hassle, and the big keys are a serious pain in the ass. WPA basically just requires you to set up what is essentially just a regular-style password that you have to enter when you connect. MUCH better.
(WPA is crackable too, but not as easily as WEP).

Not sure, but WEP may also decrease speed.

Dude!
The doctor needs to see a doctor. Seems he's got the WEP!
