As a huge Star Trek/scifi fan, I have been looking forward to this movie ever since I heard about it. I was blown away!

The first scene made me cry and I DON'T cry at movies. It was so good I'm gonna go see it again!!!!

So is Simon Pegg good as Scotty? I'm not much of a Trek fan, so haven't been tempted to venture out for any reason other than he's in it. But the fear of it ruining my estimation has also kept me away.

Okay, I'm late with this one, but nobody needs me to inform them that there's a STAR TREK reboot out there, right? I think there might have been just a BIT of pre-release publicity, and the reviews were "okay," right?

But how people react to the new TREK seems to have a lot to do with where they weigh in on all that's gone before. The big question was "Is J.J. Abrams going to give us our DUE, or is he going to change EVERYTHING?"

Now, just to make the record absolutely clear... I grew up with the original show. I have the original series (non-enhanced versions) and the animated series on DVD. I have a passing familiarity with TNG, but have spent little to no time with DS9, VOYAGER or ENTERPRISE. And I've seen all of the movies. My favorite was III, I'm the guy who didn't have a problem with V, I thought GENERATIONS was utterly wretched, but FIRST CONTACT was a good comeback, and I was indifferent to the last two.

So while I wasn't necessarily "worried" about the level of respect to "the canon" this new film would show, I was justifiably curious--especially as this reboot WOULD invoke a classic Trek actor in his eternally famous role...

Okay. Canon? Continuity? There's a time travel paradox here. They acknowledge it. They say "Our lives, our very existences may be completely changed." "An alternate reality?" "Yes." There you go. Original series acknowledged, but things are going to be different. All the explanation you need, and they SAID SO during the movie. And surely TREK veterans should enjoy this even more than the newcomers, because they "get" it, right?

So let's not waste time (or miss the point) by complaining--let's just welcome one of the most thoroughly entertaining and enjoyable science-fiction romps this side of Vulcan, shall we?

The casting is superlative throughout--everyone's talking about Chris Pine as the cocky young Kirk and Zachary Quinto as the conflicted (and even violent) Spock, but when it comes to 'uncanny,' it's Karl Urban as "Bones" that threatens to walk away with the whole thing. Hey, they're all great. Uhura, Sulu, Scotty (yep, Simon Pegg is a riot) and even the startlingly young Chekhov all manage to win you over. Eric Bana is a fine villain in classic TREK mold, and a shockingly-aged Leonard Nimoy still has presence and command (and prompts the absolute best laugh-out-loud moment simply by introducing himself to Kirk).

You don't need me to rehash the plot, you already know that the special effects are beyond reproach, etc. etc. If you're looking to me for a review at all, you just want to know what the gut-level response of this classic TREK veteran was. And now you know. If you haven't seen this yet, DO so and prepare to have a blast.

I'm in total agreement with everyone here. I was never a big fan of "Star Trek" on TV. I've only seen select episodes of the original series and "Next Generation" but never bothered with any of the other spinoffs. My biggest exposure to TREK was the movies that I grew up on. I enjoyed the ones with the original crew the best and thought the "next generation" films were interesting but not as good as the earlier ones. As the years went on, the wear-and-tear in the series was obvious.

So I embraced this "reboot" with open arms and it exceeded all my expectations. The casting and special effects were all terrific, plus it was great to see Leonard Nimoy back on the screen for the first time since STAR TREK VI. I was also tickled to see an amusing story mentioned in STAR TREK II depicted in this new movie. All in all a great time to be had even for casual Trekkies. I'll definitely be getting this when it comes out on Blu-Ray.
