Is it POSSIBLE...

See, and there's a valid question. To me there's a difference (religious ceremony versus, say, a drive-thru Vegas courthouse wedding officiated by Elvis). Again, it's about whatever your core belief/definition of marriage is. That will lead to what one believes can/cannot be done with it.

Actually I'm a big promoter of the Vegas Elvis wedding..... MUCH cheaper.... and annulments are much less messy than divorces. But marriage is too official, there is no way you can say at ANY given time yes I will still want to be with this person in 40 years, because you can't know..... it's a poorly packaged fairy tale and one of the things that causes people to be so depressed all the damn time. False hopes and expectations. Sad really.Blake NWR wrote:See, and there's a valid question. I don't know this, so I ask...
Is there a difference between State marriage and Religious marriage?
The reason for asking, obviously, is that this issue is about legal state recognized marriages. I can find 100,000 churches that won't marry a man and a man. I can also find 100,000 churches that will. A catholic church does not consider a j.ew married to a christian, a "marriage". So obviously religions are different and don't officially recognize many other beliefs of other religions and people.
On a religious point, it's moot. On a State recognized point, personal beliefs have nothing to do with it.
That's an interesting perspective that I never thought of. Now I'm wondering if MY OWN marriage is officially recognized, since I was married in a non-religious ceremony by a lesbian minister. <suspiciously drumming fingers together>
And for ONCE, I am in complete agreement with Ophidian. How is it that the various states can not only legislate who can and cannot be married (AND PROFIT FROM IT BY SELLING MARRIAGE LICENSES), yet have no part in the enforcement of the various "laws of marriage". After all, a marriage certificate is just like any other legal document and there should be legal ramifications should either party breach the contract.
But that's WAAAY off the original topic.

Eventually we'll get over ourselves, or at least enough of us will that it ceases to affect so many people. However, in the mean time, I think we should get together and put together something for the ballot that officially recognizes that gay marriage is legal in Washington state so long as Elvis officiated the ceremony and at least one witness was a licensed hooker. I don't figure it will pass, but I'll bet it will start some talking....

I think one of the reasons behind this line of thinking is a lot of people tend to get married too quickly --- all caught up in the idea of getting married and not about being married. No, there's no way to know for certain if you want to be with that person in 40 years, but I tend to think marriage is about faith as much as knowledge... even if your faith doesn't involve a God, at least faith in yourself as well as the other person to know that you've made the right decision.Born in a Casket wrote:there is no way you can say at ANY given time yes I will still want to be with this person in 40 years, because you can't know.....

Yeah, well, for someone who has never been married, you pretty much nailed it. There's taking the time to be sure, having faith that you're right, and then there's having the commitment to really work on it and not just give up at the first sign of trouble. It's actually very rewarding.
...admittedly this is coming from someone who stayed in too long.

but that's missing the point of a good marriage completely. now mind you i'm talking about a good marriage, the kind where the couple grows old together. it's not about the question of "can i see myself with this person in 40 years?". it's the question of "how could this person ever not be in my life?". who cares whether it's 40 years or 4 years. it's every waking moment. from the time you wake up next to them and smile and kiss them g'mournin dragon breath and all. to the time they fall asleep in your arms to reruns of house. from the puppy dog lust of wanting to fuck every moment you're within 3 feet of each other, to hating the fact that this person even exists. that's what marriage is about. fuck what god's lunatic fan club says.

Any religious based law that serves no other purpose than to control or hold back good people from being happy is fucking bullshit. As long as you're not inflicting physical or mental anguish upon another person anyone should be free to do as they wish.

Good point. There is no logic in love. There is no set rules or shelf life to love. And a lot of the time, there is no controlling it. And why would you?-deathboy- wrote:it's the question of "how could this person ever not be in my life?". who cares whether it's 40 years or 4 years. it's every waking moment.
If you boil everything down in a person, "love" is the most positive and compassionate feeling (and action?) someone can give to another, or share with another.
To deem that immoral is itself immoral. Immorality is a big weapon for those who oppose gay marriage. Morality to me is to do good to yourself and others. Gay people who want to get their love recognized by the governement Vs people who are against their love, and want to stop it. Tell me which side "morality" is on.
Take a picture, trick. I'm on a boat, bitch.

Exactly how I feel. This coming from someone that usually never does anything traditionally and is and probally will always be un-wed, but still likes the idea. Gay or strait.-deathboy- wrote: it's not about the question of "can i see myself with this person in 40 years?". it's the question of "how could this person ever not be in my life?".

And the government needs to back the fuck off, also. Seriously, wasting taxpayer dollars investigating steroid use in major league baseball? And the fact that so many religious organizations have our government officials in their back pockets is an atrocity that words cannot express.

The weird thing about the word "morality" is that there is that "o" that is just sitting there, begging for me to stick my cock in it. But then a few more letters down, is that long sleek "l" that needs a good suckin on to lube it up, then as I squat over the word I slowly slide it up my butt. Then at the very end of the word is that sexy "y" where I bury my face in the middle and lick the juicy pinkness. Funny word, "morality" if you really think about it.
