Jean Rollin and Redemption

Post by ROBERT »

I just found Fascination,Nude Vampire and Frissions de les Vampires at a local vidstore for cheap. Have you guys seen any of them? Fascination seems like a good bet.

I haven't seen Nude Vampire (in fact, didn't even realise it was out. I assume you mean dvd, right?), but I love the other two. Fascination is about as sexually charged a movie I've seen outside of porn. It almost borders on soft-core at times. But it doesn't take away from the movies atmosphere at all. If you liked other Rollin flicks like Living Dead Girl and Lips of Blood, then you should dig it.

Thrill of the Vampires has a lot more humor to it, as well as a really cool progressive rock score, reminiscent of some early Pink Floyd. This one took two viewings for me to warm up to it, but I most assuredly did.

In a related note, any word on when Lost In New York is coming out? I pre-ordered it ages ago and have since completely forgotten about it.

Fasination is really cool, if the print's good. The VSoM print makes it almost unwatchable, and that was the "official" release for a LONG time.

I have all of those Rollin films.

Thrill Of The Vampires/Shiver Of The Vampires does have a very cool,Syd Barrett era Pink Floyd-like soundtrack and lead actress Sanda Julian is stunning.

FASCINATION is Brigitte Lahaie's favorite film, that she starred in. I think it's a cool movie.

LIVING DEAD GIRL is very good, and has some nice gory bits.

The Nude Vampire (La Vampire Nue) is a bit slow, and kind of plays out like a mystery.

Lips Of Blood is almost as amusing as the porn film Rollin shot at the same time-(Suck Me Vampire) using the same films sets, and some of the same cast members :-)

I was kind of bored with Fascination but I REALLY liked Night Of The Hunted. Check this one out if you can. Anyone know if Redemption plans to release RAISINS DE LA MORT or LA ROSE DE FER (rose of iron) in the states? I really want to see these movies and hate buying dubs.

Isn't Synapse doing Raisins de la Mort? I'm not nearly as in tune with these things as I was a year ago, but I think I read that somewhere.

All those I listed above are the DVD, versions. The films I'm referring to, are the only Rollin films that are Uncut on the UK Redemption label. Quite a few Rollin films were on display(fairly cheap), with them,Living Dead girl,Requiem for a Vampire,Lips of Blood. But I found out they're heavily cut. (on the UK Redemption, label.)Thanks for the opinions of them.

I'm fairly sure Raisins de la Mort is being put out by Synapse in the US. Redemption in the UK.

Well it looks like I might be alone here but....Am I the only one here who can't stand Jean Rollin? Don't get me wrong his films look nice but they bore the crap out of me. I've only seen four of his films, but they were enough to tell me NOT to see any others. The only halfway decent one I saw was LIVING DEAD GIRL. As for that upcoming Synapse DVD of RAISINS, I might check it out but I really didn't like that movie a whole lot despite the presence of Brigitte Lahaie.

I prefer to call his movies "slow" as opposed to boring! LOL While I've liked most of what I've seen from him (except Zombie Lake), I can definitely understand where you're coming from and no, you're not alone. I've heard many people say that they can't stand him as well. All a matter of taste, I suppose...

I believe Image releases the Redemption discs in the US. Both logos should be on the disc if you're in the US.

Thanks Dylan. The Redemption one said it was uncut, so I just was very confused. I couldn't figure why it'd be cut here, as there's really not that much excess in it.

Chuck - you most certainly aren't the only one. They always occured to me as slow moving softcore porn - whereas there's nothing wrong with that, but it only borders on the actual pornographic line. ie - it's like porn without the porn. *yawn*

The annoying thing is the variation on our local cult movie showing broadcast thingy is they play shit like Rollin incessantly, constantly. It's just not fair...

On a side note, was it Rollin that made something like 600 films?

Allan.

I think that was Franco with the several hundred films thing (counting the several variants of each of his movies, anyway). I think Franco also co-helmed something, or spliced together, with Jean Rollin. Zombie Lake, maybe???

Hmm, I thought only the Image logo is on the US discs. well,I'll check it out later. I did see Rollin's Fascination last night. Slow moving but effective, and even entertaining.. I didn't fall asleep, like some people mentioned I would.Arthouse horror, with more of an accent on the art(and sex), than horror.

Also Bought/saw Franco's Female Vampire/a bunch of other titles. I saw the Erotikill version a few years ago. Thought it was okay. Not great. The current version, which is closer, but not hardcore to the Loves of Irina edition., is better than I expected. Added sex to a film's premise can do wonders. For the one person here who hasn't heard of it, it's about a female vampire that sucks the life out of you, via the gential region. Which star Lina Romay does quite well. recommended, with reservations. I think Franco is an acquired taste. I'm looking forward to seeing Exorcism.

As much as I like Rollin, I hate Franco equally. I've not seen one movie of his that I liked. Faceless was tolerable, but that's about it. I haven't tried Female Vampire yet, but after watching about 5-6 of his total failures (including his "masterpiece" Vampyros Lesbos), I just can't bring myself to put another into my vcr.

I just rewatched Lips of Blood last night and it's definitely Redemption. It has that stupid intro at the beginning. Image

Hell, any director I hate usually has a few films that I didn't mind - Faceless for Franco and Living Dead Girl for Rollin... But these two shit me equally. I'm sick to death of arty porn, that's all they play on the local cult movie, and I'd just wish they'd play some REAL fucking flicks (no pun intended).

Faceless is the only Franco movie I've seen that I didn't want to rip my eyeballs out during the screening of. But that goddamn theme song...

Okay, that's one against Vampyros Lesbos. I've actually earmarked this questionable cult classic for possible purchase. Questionable, because I find Franco's flicks have some pretty vehement detractors. As well as staunch fans. Guess I'm somewhere in between. Can't find it anywhere for rent, so I'll get it if I can find it for a decent price. Considering how many small retailers that are going under this Christmas,(in my neck of the woods,) it shouldn't be much of a problem.

You can also consider me,one of those detractors. Franco's a hack. Female Vampire is only good on the most basic, groin level.I'd rent a porno instead.

Ken Crane's DVD Planet (www.dvdplanet.com) has a release date of 1-28-02 for Rollin's GRAPES OF DEATH-(Raisins De La Mort) and has a picture of the cover. It's a Synapse release.
