the Faust movie

Post by Latte Thunder »

I don't know how many of you do comic books, especially the obscurities like Faust. I had a couple of copies years ago and it's one of the most violent, depraved books I've ever read. I only had scattered issues so I never knew the whole story. Something about a guy who sells his soul to satan then decides he's going to redeem himself before it's too late.

I read today at this horror web site that Brian Yuzna finished the movie and the MPAA wasn't thrilled with the outcome. So hopefully this baby gets a straight to video release with no footage cut. It's starring a bunch of people I've never heard of before and the promo pics are pretty cool. The "hero" has some sort of Wolverine arm blades on each hand. I never much cared for the comics once I grew up a bit but hopefully the movie will turn out something good.

psychedelic drugs. The family that includes Ecstasy, the phenylethylamines, has almost 200 different member drugs. Ketamine
isn't even a member of any of the nine families. The drug it most closely resembles is PCP, an animal tranquilliser. Now there's a recommendation. If speed will turn you into your parents, PCP might turn you into James Brown.

Spawn took the basic premise of Faust and turned it into shit, imo. Faust (at least the comic) was one of the most sick and depraved comics I've ever seen. I seriously felt dirty after reading some (especially issue five in which a HUGE satanic orgy takes place, ending in total bloodshed and carnage). The most violent comic I've ever seen and I'm sure the movie won't match it's intensity, unless it's was like DeadAlive, but w/o the laughs. I am looking forward to seeing it though.

dylan, you summed it up nicely... I could never put my feelings about that book into words.

Faust was published by a comic company called North Star. For an obscurity, these comics have a pretty hefty back issue price tag. As far as the movie is concerned, I don't think they have a buyer yet.

I remember that this movie was announces a long time ago. They had pics of a cast years and years ago in a magazine called Femme Fatales but nothing ever panned out. It'll be interesting to see how this movie turns out.

Cool, this comic seems right up my alley! Is it still being published?

How many issues are there?

There are 10 issues. Faust #1 was published in 87 or 88 and it seemed like the series didn't conclude until somewhere in the mid 90s. I don't know if it suffered from Crow Syndrome where the last issue didn't come out until 10 years after the previous. There are a few spin offs and too. I think 777 ties in to Faust somehow. There's also a couple of other Faust series'. The one we're talking about here is called Love of the Damned.

You can bag these comics if you look hard enough, I'm sure there are a lot of online comic stores that carry it. I've asked for them in the past and the people in the stores look at me like I'm a lunatic or a pervert. One snotty comic store asshole told me once that they "don't carry pornography."

I got that same repsonse one time! Actually, there were at least 11 issues of the original series released. I'm not sure if the 12th and final issue ever was published or not. The book originally came out on a fairly regular basis (maybe every 3 months) but when they switched to the very independent Rebel Studios, things seemed to grind to a halt. I'm not sure if that had anything to do with David Quinn going to write Dr. Strange or not. Does anyone remember Grips, the book Tim Vigil did before this one? It was kind of similar but not nearly as dark. I guess he was just getting warmed up. Also check out Eo for more perverted violent filth.

I agree. What happened to issue 12? I have about 9 issues all told. With the film's release, they should release the series as a very large graphic novel. Looking forward to the movie.

I finally got to watch this last night. Outside of a couple of really stupid parts, I'd say I'm fairly pleased with the way it came out. I knew going in that it would never be as extreme as the comic, but still there was quite a bit of bloodshed to enjoy and some sex too. The story is pretty well consistent with the book, no surprise as it was adapted by David Quinn himself. The guy who played John Jaspers was pretty good except for when he had the outfit on. He tended to go too over the top in a comical sort of way. The soundtrack was mostly metal, which is fine I suppose, but I was really hoping some of the songs from the comic (especially Papa's Got A Brand New Bag) would be used. So this one was no masterpiece, but it's still pretty good. Besides, it's always good to see Jeffrey Combs. Image

I've been seeing this one in video stores and have been meaning to pick it up but I never do. I was actually surprised to look up on the new release board and see it labeled there. I thought it was never coming out.

I'll have to give it a look.

I'd read some of the comics over the years (still have them around here somewhere), and I wasn't too impressed with the movie.

I thought the guy who played Jaspers was horrible through the whole film--costumed or not. I thought the rest of the movie was pretty bland--but there was some nice gore.

Overall, given the comic and Yuzna's involvement, I had higher hopes for this one.

Isn't Mark Dacascos the guy who plays Jaspers? I thought I read that somewhere. That guy is really hit or miss sometimes. Supposedly he steals the show in Brotherhood of the Wolves.

I've seen Brotherhood(at a film festival), Latte. He does a very good job of stealing the movie from the lead actor. Some really awesome sword and tomahawk fight scenes too.

man... you are lucky, Robert. Right now I would trade a kidney to see Brotherhood. From the trailers I've seen it just looks awesome! I'm hoping it gets some kind of domestic release.

It's released theatricly in Canada in early November. I don't know about it's U.S release. But Universal was one of it's distributors, for overseas.markets. So it just may be in U.S theatres in the nearr future. P.S It's every bit as good as it looks in the trailer.

I may be mistaken but I was under the impression that Sony Pictures Classics were gonna distribute BROTHERHOOD in the States.

Latte,

Mark Frost played Jaspers in the film. Dacoscos would have probably been better, IMHO.

Faust?? Hey, wasn't he a poet or something?? The real guy I mean. That's what the comics were based on isn't it?

Faust had 11 issues of the original series published. Tim Vigil draws too slow to have finished #12 yet though...it's only been 5+ years. There's been a spin off series, I'm told. The original series has also been augmented to 13 issues instead of the original proposed 12. I don't know if it's still being printed, but there were several editions out years ago.

As for the "real" Faust, he was a guy who made a deal with the devil in the work of Göthe (although I think he is based on a true person)

I'm not sure if anyone still cares, but I was just taking a look around ebay and I noticed that the 12th and final issue of the Faust comic has FINALLY been released. I'm not sure exactly when this happened but fairly recently I think. It must be the greatest comic book of all time because it was 7 FUCKING YEARS IN THE MAKING!!!

Oh well, I'm sure to get one at least to complete my collection. I'm a sap, I know.....

If it takes years to make the greatest comic ever, then I think the Crow takes the cake. 12 years between issue 3 and 4! Image
