Escape From New York SE DVD...

Post by Latte Thunder »

...coming January 2003.

I can hardly wait.

Apparently, it's going to contain the commentary from the Laserdisc, it'll have a couple of interviews, but most importantly, the entirety of the Bank Robbery/Subway scene that is alluded to and I guess featured in bits on other versions of the movie.

This is one of the biggest movies I've been waiting for.

That's good news, as long as the Robbery/Subway sequence is put back into the film and isn't just included as a supplement. Hopefully they'll include the original cut and the extended version on the disc flipside or do that seamless branching to incorporate it.
The laserdisc commentary for EFNY is my favourite of the many tracks done by JC.

Well, I still haven't heard of anyone patching old deleted footage into existing movies on DVD yet but this disc has been in production for quite a while. I seem to remember it being announced around the same time the Big Trouble In Little China disc was announced, so you never know. They may have spent the extra time working on it to add the robbery footage. After all, the scene is being digitally restored as I'm sure the old reels are probably beaten up and not looking all that great. So it would be cool if the entire scene was added to the movie itself.

A Carpenter quote from Fangoria.com:

“We have a special-edition DVD of ESCAPE FROM NEW YORK coming out around the same time,” reveals Carpenter, “which includes the legendary missing first 10 minutes of the film [where Snake gets caught by the police]. It should be pretty fun to watch.”

He's referring to Spring, 2003, and unfortunately he hasn't made it any clearer whether the scene will be incorporated into the movie. C'mon, is a little bit of seamless branching too much to ask?

Check out the whole article for some interesting news on a Snake Plissken anime(!):

Another confirmation of this over at The Digital Bits, and January sounds good to me:

"10/21/02

You fans of director John Carpenter, who are waiting patiently for MGM's promised Escape from New York: Special Edition, will be pleased to hear what this reader has to say. Bits reader R.J. sent this in over the weekend:

"I was at a screening in NYC at the Walter Reade Theater where they were showing The Thing and preceding the event was a Q&A with director John Carpenter. According to him, the MGM Special Edition disc of Escape from New York is scheduled to be released January 2003 and it will include 10 minutes that was originally cut from the theatrical release, showing a robbery leading to the arrest of Snake Plissken. This scene was shown in dribs and drabs during a featurette on the previous laserdisc release by New Line, that included commentary w/ Carpenter and Kurt Russell. Whether it will get put back in the movie or included as a separate deleted scene is unknown. But you heard it first from the prince of darkness himself, John Carpenter."

Cool news! We're waiting to hear back from MGM with confirmation on this, and we'll post details as soon as we have them. Thanks, R.J.!

Stay tuned..."
