I've really enjoy Sonata Arctica for some time now. Someone got me onto them about 8 months ago, and now it's on my regular playlist.

Some other similar stylings:

Therion
Rhapsody (Cheese Central but cool music)
Nightwish
Hammerfall
Edguy
Elvenking
Helloween (Don't think they are still making music tho)

Great stuff. I love the whole over the top melodic metal scene. :D

I don't think I agree with the above list... a similar band to Sonata Arctica is more like Stratovarius, but the thing I like about SA is that they have a definite strong songwriting ability and they are easily one of my favorites also. [edit: they, being the singer as the songwriting backbone I believe]

That's a fair assessment. I think my point was more along the lines of cool melodic power metal. :)

Speaking of which, Fatalis plays at El Corazon tonight if you want to come down and support some local melodic power metal bands... :D
