King of Kong

Post by Latte Thunder »

From what I understand, this is getting the usual documentary treatment as far as theatrical releases go. So many will probably have to wait until DVD, but since a lot of you guys are from Seattle, maybe you had the chance to catch it at SIFF. Too bad, if you missed it.

King of Kong is about competitive video gaming. Specifically, the old Donkey Kong champ is called out to defend his 22 year old record against a new guy on the classic gaming circuit and as foolish as that sounds, it's fucking awesome. There is real drama, good guys, bad guys and seriously nerdy adults who haven't grown much since thy were 13.

yeah it was pretty good, although for some reason the DVD would not play on my stand alone DVD player. I tried 2 different discs too. Weird. You can watch it on a PC though.

Worked fine for me on my cheap Phillips DVD player. Great movie with local flavor :)

weird. I had the exact same issue with "Shoot em up" or whatever it was called. This DVD player is strange.

Well put together as a film, and entertaining, but as a documentary, there was some total bullshit.

What was up with not saying Billy's tape was reviewed for verification? I think that was deliberately left out to make Twin Galaxies look bad, because other than their reaction to Billy's tape, what did they do? The checking out of Steve's machine is a completely two sided story, so who knows what happened there? Also, I guess Billy did meet up with Steve at Ricky's, so why was it shown to be like he was avoiding him? Essentially, I got the impression there wasn't really a bad guy, so the filmmakers were a bit liberal with the truth to create tension. The thing that got me looking for more info was one guy's mention that Steve also held the record for Donkey Kong Jr, which isn't mentioned elsewhere. He wouldn't desperately need to be proving himself as a world record holder if he already had one, would he?

Great entertainment, though, and the DVD kicks ass.

Thanks for the recommendation Latte!
