Mistery of the glowing speaker

Post by Frank the Hammer »

So, I have an AMPEH SVT and an AMPEG 6X10.

I was playing the other day (digging in hard with a pick) when I noticed the top two speakers would "glow" around the parameter when I would overdrive the amp on certain notes. The part that was lighting up was the flexible part of the speaker and it was only the top two.
What. The .fuck?

Never been inside one of those cabs, but it used to be pretty common for some manufacturers to use a light bulb as a current limiter, mostly in cheap junk equipment though. If you use a 100 watt bulb, it's electrically almost transparent until you crank the voltage up enough to create a load larger than 100 watts, then it starts to glow.

I'm surprised that Ampeg would resort to that kind of cheesy trick instead of just using higher wattage drivers. Of course that SVT is really designed for 8 drivers...

So weird, only the top 2 speakers, only when he was pounding the high strings.

EDIT Found this thread ... Google is your friend!

Comments - "There's a light bulb that's used to take excess energy away from the tweeter or something like that. When you play loud or hard, the light comes on. Perfectly normal."

"Tweeter protection circuit. You might want to calm down with the treble and presence on your EQ."

... that or you might wanna just call Ampeg/LOUD (Mackie in Woodinville) and ask them. And BTW, you spell "mystery" like this dumbass! ;)
