I'm planning a trip to San Diego for a few days of just relaxing. . . Three nights, four days kind of thing. . . .

So I've never been that far south in the whole time I lived in Cali, where's a good place to stay, to do, best beaches?

Let me know your thoughts and opinions if you have stayed/lived/been there.

Thanks! :)

First question is, why?

San Diego has the twin advantages of the L.A. basin up north, and a totally polluted shithole to the south called Tiajuana so it gets ALL the smog and raw sewage from Mexico.

Stay away from the southern beaches. Stay north of Mission Bay and you wont get the floating lumps of sewage that you'll see on Imperial Beach (seriously, they regularly close that area off to swimmers). You want to see the San Diego zoo if you can and the museums at Balboa park, the zoo is one of the best in the world.

Beaches: La Jolla, Scripps Pier and the aquarium there. North of there, Blacks Beach etc. North of there getting up to Del Mar the houses encroach on the beach too much and you don't see any sand because all the "celebrities" have put rip-rap down in front of their houses to keep the ocean away.

STAY OUT OF TIAJUANA. Seriously. It is literally a war zone. People are finding decapitated heads practically every day and the cocaine gangs regularly shoot things out in the streets in broad daylight with automatic weapons. I'm dead serious about that.

San Diego is not a bad town, but think of Detroit with beaches and tourism.

DeathFrogg, You ask why San Diego?

Two reasons:

Sun and cheap airfare.

I will be also going back to Guerneville and Santa Rosa the weekend after but obviously don't need advice of where to go there. :devildoll

I went on a trip at the end of the summer. We stayed downtown in the gasoline(?) district. That city stays up late and sleeps the fuck in. It's great. The zoo and Sea World are cool. The water cannons at Sea World are extra fun to soak people> I'm mean, so that shit owned. One pocket full of quarters brings many smiles. "Believe" was the theme at Shamu. when it says splash zone , believe it. I saw a woman who didn't and she was crying. Couldn't help but to crack a smile. Bring your sham-wow

Ahhhh....I was supposed to go to San Diego a couple of months ago, but my roomie decided to move out and threw my life in the lurch. Only lost $100 + what it took to move + part of my sanity. We were gonna go to the zoo. I hear it's fab. :)

Hi Jenzy-it's Hollie. I was stationed down there for about 9 months and then it became our second homeport when I was in the Navy so I spent quite a bit of time down there. First, I second Deathfrogg when he says don't go to Tijuana. Just don't. It's not worth it. It sucks, it's dirty, and will just sour your trip. As for places to go? Well, you gotta see SeaWorld. It's like a requirement. The Gaslamp district downtown is always a favorite, lots of bars & restaurants, and a (crappy) mall. My favorite coffee shop that I always visited and hung out at constantly was called Bassam's and it's at the corner of Fourth and Market across from Hooters. And it's open late, so we'd all get drunk and then stop by for a latte. The place is awesome with tons of atmosphere. My favorite shopping district was on Garnett ave, right by Ruby beach. I'm not sure if it's still there or not or still good anymore but it was awesome when I was there. The best mall in the vicinity is in National City. Also, I'd recommend staying somewhere in Hotel Circle (yes, that is actually the name & it's on all the freeway exit signs). It by Qualcomm stadium. There were a lot of places there that I used to just hang out at, but not many of them are tourism worthy. However, if I think of anything, I'll let you know. Have fun and be safe!

When are you going? I think we're going to hit San Diego next month as well. I gotta have more sun in my life than Seattle offers in the winter. :(

Cancun is still a couple months away.

Discovered by the Germans in 1904, they named it San Diego, which of course in German means a whale's vagina.
